“Indian Yellow”
Digital, done for the Month of Love challenge, “Yellow”
Historically the pigment “Indian Yellow” was made from the urine of cows in Bengal that had been fed nothing but mango leaves. Indian Yellow was a favorite of both watercolor and oil painters, but its production was despised by other Indian farmers due to the cruelty of the practice and the torture of sacred animals. In the early twentieth century it was prohibited, likely due to both this and the British laws against animal cruelty.
